As anyone who’d be reading this probably already knows, I bought a new house on November 30th. The whole house needs to be painted, including the doors, baseboards, and trim. It’s overwhelming. I’ve started a lot but finished almost nothing. The basement has been completed though. I started with the basement due to the amount of time I spend in it. My after-work hangout being ugly, cluttered, and dreary wasn’t working for me.
I took some crappy “before” photos when I did my initial visit of the house, so all of the ugly furniture and mess in the before pictures belongs to the previous owners.
The color of the basement was the SAME COLOR that the rest of the house is painted. Every inch of the house is that terrible brown – even the bathrooms and closet walls. It makes me feel like I’m in a burlap bag where colors go to die.
The wall color now is called “Moonlit Snow” by Behr. It’s a beautiful purple-toned gray that shifts in different lighting, which I love. I always use a satin finish for my paint because I like a little bit of light reflecting on the walls – it makes a room feel brighter. I changed the ceiling bulbs to LED bulbs in a daylight (5000k) color temperature. I also replaced the horrible brown blinds with a 2″ cordless faux wood blind from Home Depot. In case you’re not aware, they’ll actually trim blinds to your desired width at the store at no cost. There’s no need to order custom blinds!
Before the furniture was way oversized for the space, so when I looked at the house I didn’t think that I’d be able to fit my sectional and pinball machine comfortably.
I used an iPad/Macbook app called Home Design 3D to layout the space before I moved in. You can add furniture and adjust its color and dimensions to match your own. It worked out really well and helped me figure out a way to keep my kitchen island stools from my old house, as the kitchen here does not have one. The bar table is the perfect place to sit with your drink while waiting for someone to finish their turn at the pinball machine.
The bar table and sectional are from Wayfair. The bar stools and console table are from Target. The TV stand is a hand-me-down from my mom, I am not sure of its origin.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! The next post in this series will likely be the office; it is almost done, I just need to install the new light fixture and hang 2 shelves.
